RONCALLI, Carlo. DORIDE. In Venezia: dalla stamperia Graziosi, 1803.  SOLD

First Separate Printing. 8vo, pp. 42; with engraved portrait vignette on title-page; clean and crisp throughout; in contemporary marbled boards; some light wear, and lower joint worn with lower board slightly loose.

A pretty copy of the first separate printing of this collection of madrigals, epigrams, love poems, and wordplay by the Brescia poet and nobleman Carlo Roncalli Parolino (1732-1811), which had first appeared as part of his Primo e secondo libro d’epigrammi in 1793. That collection included many translations by Roncalli of French and Latin epigrams from the likes of Voltaire and Ausonius, as well as the present madrigals, which are here reprinted preceded on the title-page by a portrait vignette of Doride (possibly Emilia Silvestri, to whom the epistle is dedicated, not by Roncalli himself but by the Brescia writer Gaetano Fornasini (1770-1830), in whose literary career Roncalli had taken an early interest.

See Enciclopedia Bresciana vol 15, p. 229; OCLC records copies at Trento, Rovereto, and the Italian Province of the Jesuits; outside Italy, it locates copies of the Primo e secondo libro d’epigrammi of 1793 at Toronto, University of British Columbia, the BnF, and the Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
